Bills of material give the designer the opportunity, in addition to the construction drawings with the geometrically represented components, to record all the necessary non-graphic information and to forward it to the relevant authorities.
The most distinctive of this non-graphic information is:

Position number
Component designation
Numbers of items
Materials
Raw dimensions
Component weight
Reference to standards
Item number
Special manufacturing processes
Suppliers, etc.
